Planting Seeds for Tomorrow

Fall is a season of preparation. In nature, plants store energy, animals gather resources, and nature slows down. These quiet preparations help make future growth possible.

So it is with gardening, and with organizations. Like many of you, I spend the autumn poring over seed catalogs, deciding what to plant next year and reflecting on which varieties flourished this season.

This year, amid my notes and sketches, I’ve written myself a reminder: create my sit spots.

A sit spot is a place in nature that we return to over time and with intention: observing, being present, and immersing ourselves in the living world. Much like the “teacher tree” we return to again and again in the Spiritual Wisdom of Trees course, a sit-spot practice helps us attune to the rhythms of the more-than-human world.

My sit spot is in the middle of my small backyard garden, among the colorful raised beds that house my flowers and vegetables. There, I have witnessed the work of pollinators, welcomed migrating butterflies, and watched blossoms slowly become peppers and tomatoes.

In a different but meaningful way, the Center has become a sit spot for our community: a familiar place to return to, a space to pause, share, listen, learn, and deepen connection with the richness of the living world - of which we are just one part. Through monthly meditations, programs, and courses, you help make possible a growing community of seekers who gather with intention and care.

Just as I am planning my garden for the year ahead, we are preparing for 2027 at the Center. With your support, we will continue offering the programs and practices you value, create new resources that deepen connection with the living world, and nurture a welcoming community for all who seek this work.

Your participation in this incredible community is already a tremendous gift, will you make a financial gift today to help plant the seeds of what comes next?
